Louche women

Unless you’re a craft gin nerd, ‘louching’ isn’t a word many people have heard of, but it’s a phenomenon that those who drink Mothers Ruined gin might encounter, so we think it’s worth explaining.

Neat gin is almost always totally clear, even if it’s coloured (as three of ours are), but when tonic is added you might notice that it turns slightly cloudy. This a sign of a botanically intense gin i.e. one that has a busty, bold flavour; the addition of tonic means some of those botanical components drop out of solution. Some (gin snobs!) argue that it’s an issue the distiller can - and should - control for during the distillation, but we’ve decided to leave our process as it is, because we believe it’s a sign of a more interesting gin.

Viva la louche!
